iGS Web (03.03.2010Hello !
I'm a librarian in France, and I'm very interested in your radio on the Internet (kansalaismedia.lasipalatsi.
fi.). I 've read what you say about it in your annual report 2008, but I'd like to have more information : do you have an annual report 2009 (maybe you haven't finished it...)? Who manages the radio? How long do you have to work until a program is achieved? Do you know which people listen to your radio programs? Do you create programs for a specific public (for instance : special programs for students, retired people...). If you have special reports about this radio, I would be happy to read them.
Thank you very much,
With regards
Céline, Lyon (France)
Hi Céline!

Unfortunately we don´t have the yet the annual report 2009. But here are some answers:

Aapo Rikala is our audio producer. He is in charge of all the radio programs by Helsinki City Library.

It depends on the program how much time is needed to do it. At the moment we have four different types of programs.
They are:
- Secrets of City (in Finnish "Stadin salaisuudet"), a program based on answers published in Information Gas Station and that concern Helsinki, duration less than a minute. The work includes editing the answer and making it suitable for radio.
- The book of the week about Helsinki ("Viikon helsinkiläinen kirja"), a program which presents a book, duration 2-3 minutes. The program is edited by our editors in Modern Finnish Writers. See: http://kirjailijat.kirjastot.fi/en-GB/
- One minute hint ("Minuutin vinkkaus"), one minute long book hint. The program is edited by personel in Kallio Library children´s department.
- My library ("Minun kirjastoni"), interview of a well known person about his/ her´s own library, duration 5 minutes.

These programs are broadcasted in Radio Helsinki. Radio Helsinki´s audience is mainly young adults living in Helsinki metropolitan area.

For example One minute hint the target audience is little childrens parents or grandparents. We have no special programs for students or retired people.

I hope this information is useful for You. If you have more questions please contact Mr. Aapo Rikala (aapo.rikala@hel.fi).

iGS Web (02.03.2010I am looking for a map of the currents of the East River (NYC)
There are several sources of information about nautical charts which, depending on the accuracy, will give information on currents of the East River (NYC).

Best sources of information on nautical charts might be a local governmental agency such as the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):

Decent sources of information about nautical charts can also be found from the related wikipedia entry:

iGS Web (19.02.2010How many languages does a Finnish person speak in average?
I am so sorry that I answered earlier too hastily and pessimisticaly. The fact seems to be that a Finnish person speaks in average two languages. The other being in most cases English.

"The Finnish find that they are rather skilled in foreign languages, 77% in comparison with the European average of 44%. But what does it really mean to be skilled?

Could it be related to the practices, such as subtitles on TV ? The subtitles can encourage and make it easier to learn languages, and the respondents of the Nordic countries appreciate the subtitles (93% of the Finns), so this would mean that they are used to hear different languages on TV.

It is true that Finns are good in foreign languages, for in Finland 69% of the population can speak more than one foreign language, 47% at least two languages and 23% even three foreign languages. In Finland the foreign language skills are above the European average. The fact that in Finland there are two official languages has surely influenced the language attitudes. Anyway, the mother tongue of most Finns is Finnish (92%), so the country is more homogeneous linguistically than most of the European countries.

What foreign languages are the most common in Finland? It is not a surprise that nowadays English is the most common foreign language with 63%, Swedish being in second place with its status of official language (41%), while German comes in third place with 18%, being traditionally the most popular."

iGS Web (09.02.2010Hello!

Currently I have been developing a charity work plan with 7 friends to go support children in need in Thailand for 2 weeks. I am wondering whether there is some kind of organisation(s) that are willing to give financial aid to these major over-seas project in Finland.

Thank you!
Hello,

Searching in the internet gave me no result. In your situation I would contact some (fairly big)companies in Finland to see if they would be interested in acting as sponsors to your project. It may also be worthwile to ask institutions such as Kirkon ulkomaanapu (lutheran church aid to foreign countries)for actual help or ideas as they may know who else you could turn to for help.

iGS Web (08.02.2010Hi,
I'm interested in knowing whether or not the confiscation of Jewish property, their imprisonment, slaughter and forced labour, and the extraction of all sorts of valuables (gold teeth for example) during the time of the Third Reich ever was economically profitable?
In short; did Nazi Germany benefit economically from the Holocaust, or did the cost of moving, locking up, guarding, feeding, killing etc. the victims cost more than was extracted?

I know the Soviet GULag system never achieved profitability, but haven't found information on this regarding Nazi Germany.
Thank You for Your answer!
Hi!
Difficult question! It is impossible to answer it comprehensively. By a quick glance it seems that Nazi Germanyt did benefit from the confiscation of the Jews.

iGS Web (03.02.2010Which are the true numbers cuurently in official statistics of home violence concerning which one, man or woman, is the initiator and starts abusive behaviour?
Are you looking for information about Finland?

I searched and found out that there is conflicting information about the subject. According to Wikipedia the most common view in Finland is that in 90% of home violence cases victim is the woman and man is the initiator. But the problem is that there has not been done extensive studies of male victims.

iGS Web (26.01.2010Hello! I am wondering where I could find information on and get teeth bracers? I visited the local hospital nearby where I live (Kannelmaki) and they said they couldn't help me get teeth bracers, not even if I pay. Thank you!
Hello! In your case the only way to get dental braces is to have it done by a private dentist. Adults are not entitled to orthodontic treatment at a municipal dental clinic, as you were told in Kannelmäki.

The best way to go about it is to choose a private dental clinic ('yksityinen hammaslääkäriasema' in Finnish) at a convenient distance - you'll have to visit it frequently during the treatment. Most dentists speak English, but you may wish to ask about this, too, when you contact the clinic.

Incidentally, orthodontic treatment is 'oikomishoito' in Finnish, brace(s) is usually 'hammasraudat'. This may help, if the first person you talk to isn't fluent in English.

You could start by googling for hammaslääkäriasema helsinki.
Some web sites include information in English:
http://cityhammas.com/en/node/1 (see Our Services for Orthodontics)
http://www.oral.fi/english (see Information about dental care / Dental care for Orthodontic treatment)
There are others, these are just examples.

The search orthodontic treatment helsinki in english returns a list of clinics:
http://www.finnguide.fi/finlanddire...linics.asp

When you consult the hammaslääkäriasema, it's quite all right to request a cost estimate and ask any other questions you may have.

iGS Web (22.01.2010Hello. I'd like to know when the Finnish Idols season 5 will be? and do I need to be able to speak Finnish in order to sign up for the competition?

I have looking for information from the internet but I didn't find anything.
Thank you for your help!
Finnish Idol competition is taking a brake; for how long has not been decided yet. Simon Cowell's another song competition X-Factor takes its place In Finland, at least for the time being. iGS Web (04.01.2010Hei,

I would like to know if there is any eclipse today here in Finland? If so please let me know the time.

Thanks!
You sent your question on the 31st of December, 2009. The answer is yes, there was a partial eclipse of the Moon that could be seen in Finland on that day. The eclipse started at 19:15 and was at its deepest at 21:23.

The next eclipse of the Moon that can be seen in Finland will take place 25.4.2013.

Probably this answer is not very much use to you any more, but unfortunately the questions in iGS will not be answered immediately. If you happened to miss the eclipse on New Year's Eve, I can only say that it wasn't all that impressive anyway ;)

3. Is there any public archive or library I can given the access to where I could find some information about relations between Italy and Finland in different areas (in English, of course....my Finnish is not yet very good....!!!!)
1. According to a recent publication about Helsinki there are 623 people who speak Italian as native language. According to Helsinki City Statistics and Information Services this is the information available about Italian citizens in Helsinki. iGS Web (30.11.2009When is it appropriate to use the word "apropos"?
”Apropos” as an adjective means ”appropriate, pertinent or relevant”. (Have some apropos comments)

As an adverb ”apropos” means either ”at an opportune time” (Your letter comes apropos as usual) or ”appropriately or pertinently”. It also means “by the way or incidentally” (Apropos, your sister told me about your new job.)

As a preposition “apropos” is often used with “of” and means “with regard to” or “in respect of”, “regarding, concerning”. (His remark to Emerson apropos of diplomas).

Apropos is of French origin: "à propos" to the purpose
